For many individuals in the neurodiversity community, masking has become a common practice in order to fit in with societal norms and expectations. Masking can be described as the act of suppressing certain behaviours, traits or characteristics in order to present a more neurotypical version of oneself to the world.
Masking can be particularly common among individuals with autism, who may find social situations overwhelming and challenging. In order to navigate these situations, many autistic individuals may feel the need to mask their differences and conform to social expectations. However, this can be incredibly taxing on an individual's mental health and wellbeing.
Research has shown that masking can increase depression, anxiety, and burnout in the neurodiversity community. It requires an enormous amount of energy and can lead to feelings of isolation and disconnection. This is why unmasking is becoming a more common practice for many individuals in the community.
Unmasking is the process of embracing and celebrating one's authentic self, including their neurodivergent traits and behaviours. It involves breaking down the barriers that were created to fit in with societal norms and embracing who you truly are.
For me, unmasking means allowing myself the freedom to be who I am without feeling the need to hide my differences. It means using noise-canceling earbuds in loud environments, taking extra steps to ensure I get the rest I need, and vocalizing my needs and anxieties. It means embracing my stimming behaviours when stressed and refusing to participate in activities that make me uncomfortable.
The process of unmasking can be challenging, but it can also be incredibly liberating. By embracing your authentic self, you can reduce the stress and energy spent trying to hide your differences. It can lead to a greater sense of self-acceptance and self-love, which are essential for mental wellbeing.
So, if you find yourself continuously masking your differences, it may be time to start taking off the mask and embracing your authentic self. Remember, your differences are what make you unique and special. By embracing them, you can develop a greater sense of self-awareness and self-confidence and help others understand and accept you for who you are.
In conclusion, unmasking is an essential practice for many individuals in the neurodiversity community. It involves embracing and celebrating your authentic self and breaking down the barriers created by societal expectations. By unmasking, you can reduce stress and anxiety and improve your mental wellbeing. Remember, it's okay to be different, and your differences are what make you unique and special.
